Not only does it suck to be in the same room as they pronounce – but what do you say when the family parade comes around – speaking in terms of the fellow roomate.
I’ve only been involved with 2 codes – one while I was still a student and 1 as a nurse… The one as a nurse the patient was in a private room. The one as a student was in a ward room – so there was THREE other patients who had to listen to the drama of the code and the death pronounce. I couldn’t imagine being the other patient listening to it all since it isn’t always being around even as a nurse.
I will bring this idea into my practice for sure – it makes you think about the after care that must not only be provided to the loved ones grieving, but also to the roomate who experienced the code as well, i’m sure that they are looking at their own mortallity after something like that occurs.
