Oh Captain, My Captain!

It’s been a little more than a week since Robin Williams took his own life in his San Francisco area home.  I have to say that that one hit me hard.  It was a shock more than anything else.  Immediately I thought, drugs, he fell off the wagon and managed to kill himself.   The following day I learned that he was found hanging with a belt with superficial cuts on his wrists.  That made me profoundly sad.  The world has lost an amazing talent.

I was fortunate to be able to see him in his Weapons Of Self Destruction tour at UCF. That was an amazing show.  It was great even though I had nose bleed seats.  My husband and I were just talking a little while before that it would be great to see him again in concert. That wont be happening.

Robin Williams not only made us laugh year after year from Mork and Mindy to his turn as Roosevelt in Night at the Museum.  I have learned that he had reprised his role in Night at the Museum 3 which I believe is already in the can, as they say in Hollywood or at the very least in post production.  Mrs Doubtfire 2 was in the works but will now not be happening. So much potential for laughter.

I can only imagine what pain he must have been in to leave his beloved family and to take his own life. Makes me sad to think about it.

What are your favorite Robin Williams movies?  Mine are as follows:

The Dead Poets Society

This is by far my favorite more of his.  Inspiring to many to Carpe Diem- to Seize the Day.  Gather thee rosebuds while ye may….  While in college, I did a production of A Midsummer Nights Dream and we watched this at the cast party.  I had seen it many times before but now it holds extra special meaning.

Good Morning Vietnam

Such a funny movie on such a serious topic.  Showed Robin’s ability to swing from the funny to the dramatic and he was amazing.  One of my favorite movies of all time.

Mrs Doubtfire

I just love this movie. Heartwarming and funny

What Dreams May Come

A little known, a little depressing, but artistically amazing film.  If you haven’t seen it you must check it out.  It willed me with wonder.

RIP Robin.  You will be missed.

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
                         But O heart! heart! heart!
                            O the bleeding drops of red,
                               Where on the deck my Captain lies,
                                  Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
                         Here Captain! dear father!
                            This arm beneath your head!
                               It is some dream that on the deck,
                                 You’ve fallen cold and dead.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
                         Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
                            But I with mournful tread,
                               Walk the deck my Captain lies,
                                  Fallen cold and dead.
