Nursing jobs, where are they?

It seems very difficult to find a nursing job. I have placed at least 10- 15 applications and been refused several due to lack of an RN license, or lack of experience. There are plenty of jobs out there. It’s rather disheartening to find the number of jobs which require 6 months, 12 months or more experience. How does one gain experience if they don’t get a job as a nurse?

I suppose it was the same way as when I first started off in Respiratory. And maybe i just don’t remember it being this hard. My first RT job was in a nursing home with adults, memory care unit and a pediatric unit. Less than 9 months later I was taped for a job in critical care where I worked for two years in the SICU, CCU and MICU. The rest is the history of my career.

I digress.

I applied for several jobs at my place of employment and contacted, via email the director of one of the departments with my resume and expressed desire to work in her department. It’s been three business days and I have heard nothing so far. This email was at the recommendation of a management person that I know who also works in that department. I’ve heard nothing from any other hospitals either. So discouraging. I will follow up tomorrow as promised in my cover letter email. There are three more jobs I will throw my hat in the ring for this week.

I’ve been told my experience as an RT should make me an attractive applicant and I had hoped this was true but it seems its not. Also disappointing. I’m trying very hard to stay positive and not get discouraged.

Until then I will continue to work at my current job as an RT.
