My favorite movies that I love to watch at Christmastime.
Love Actually (2003)
This is the perfect movie to watch in the run up to Christmas. It takes place in the 6 weeks before Christmas, It follows 8 couples or separate stories which kind of converge at the end and they are somehow connected. People fall in love, people fall out of love, people confess love, people mourne lost love all with a holiday theme. I just love this movie, it’s heartwarming and heart breaking with a happy ending. Great all star cast too.
The Holiday (2006)
Two women swap houses for the holiday season and find themselves and find love. A feel good film.
White Christmas (1954)
A successful song-and-dance team become romantically involved with a sister act and team up to save the failing Vermont inn of their former commanding general. Old School Christmas.
A must see at Christmas time.
Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera Ellen.
Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
When a nice old man who claims to be Santa Claus is institutionalized as insane, a young lawyer decides to defend him by arguing in court that he is the real thing. Natalie Wood plays a young girl who doesn’t believe in Santa and whose mother coordinates the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, meets the man hired to play Santa who says he really is Santa. She begins to believe. Christmas Magic!
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
A magical movie about a boy with scissor hands. Johney Depp plays an uncommonly gentle young man, who happens to have scissors for hands, falls in love with a beautiful teenage girl (Wynonna Rider). A movie that harkens back to a time when life was simpler. Vincent Price’s last performance in a movie.
The Little Princess (1939)
When her father, Captain Crewe, goes off to fight in the Boer War, young Sara Crewe is placed into the care of Amanda Minchin, the head of an exclusive private school for girls. Sara lives a wonderful life of a privileged child and is quite happy in her surroundings. When her father is listed as missing in action however, her life goes from one of plenty to that of a poor house maid. Mrs. Minchin agrees to keep her on at the school, but in the absence of her tuition payments, she has to work for her keep. She is soon cleaning out the fireplace and scrubbing floors and is dubbed the little princess by her former schoolmates. She also refuses to accept that her father is dead and prowls the hospitals in the hope of locating him.
I just love this movie and could watch it over and over.
The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Not really a Christmas film but one I would always watch as a kid in December. This film looks really good for having been made in 1939. EmeraldCity is just gorgeous.
