After much thinking and facing the challenges of being a new nurse , I have ultimately decided to defer enrollment in my BSN program until Summer 2013 instead of Spring 2013.
Just the thought of starting school in January makes me want to cry. I haven’t even been out of school a year yet and am enjoying my freedom from the school books. Plus, I am still trying to learn my new job. I think I would be overwhelmed at this point. I would like to put my best foot forward and January won’t be it. I am just NOT ready.
Pro’s of Starting School one semester Later
- Can take time to learn my job
- Can save more money to put toward school so I don’t have to take more student loans. (which i just started paying back AGAIN)
- Possibly getting the class I want instead of having to drive to Leesburg for lab 4-5 times. (63 mile drive one way) or Ocala (120 miles one way)
- More time to get comfortable in my new career.
- I THINK a friend of mine from nursing school is going to apply for summer. (But that is defiantly NOT even remotely a factor in my decision.)
Con’s of starting School One semester Later
- Done on semester later (Fall 2014)
- Summer start. Semester shorter- may shoot myself in the foot with that.
- More time we have to spend where we live now. (well technically not we could move somewhere else in the Orlando area, but still we can’t move up north)
Really the Pro’s Outweigh the Cons.
Another thing that guided my decision was about the ease of deferring to summer would be. I immediately emailed my adviser and asked about this. She said I just need to redo my plan of study (POS) and change my date of enrollment. So that was pretty easy. I will likely be much more ready to return to school if I have a full year off.
