I am a bad chicken mama. Not too long ago I let the chickens out to scratch around in the little yard we created outside of their run with a dog enclosure. We only let them out in this enclosure when we are outside to watch them because we have predators around. Coyotes have been known to roam around in our neighborhood.
Anyway, when it was time to put the chickens away, I threw in some scratch and encouraged them to go inside to their run (which my husband built.). There is a door which has two slide locks on it. Because the chickens scratch a lot displacing soil and grass the door frequently closes and is usually met with resistance when closing it.
All the chickens were inside and I shut the door met with the usual resistance. One of my chickens, was just sitting near the door after it was closed. I stood and looked at her for a moment and wondered why she was sitting. She wasn’t in a panic or anything she was just sitting there in the dirt. After a few moments I saw her pull her leg but it wasn’t free. I freaked out and ran to open the door I had closed. Turns out her right outer toe was stuck under the door.
I felt awful! I can’t believe I did that to one of my six babies!! I couldn’t catch her so I waited for my husband to get home and explained what happened. We went out and got her out of the coop and brought her up onto the pool deck to our dining table. My husband took a look at her toes. There was a nick in her right outside toe. It was pink on the inside. I was concerned about infection since they live their lives stepping in the dirt and mud and stepping in their own poop on occasion.
We bathed and cleaned her foot and Dried her foot off and added antibiotic ointment to her toe and wrapped the individual toe in Vet Wrap We have flesh colored wrap which worked out nicely to not get her pecked because she had a foreign thing on her.
Every day for a few days we unwrapped, washed and placed Antibiotic ointment on it. We are now down to every couple of days and it’s looking good. Another week and she should be good as gold.
She isn’t any worse for wear as far as her activity. She is her same old spunky self that she has always been. I am thankful.
